As a child, we moved often.  My dad’s job moved us every few years until I was 12.  As a young adult (the emphasis on young), I moved from Floyd in the southwestern Virginia mountains to northern Virginia, West Virginia, and then Virginia Beach.  I spent the next seven years bouncing from place to place around the country, New Orleans, California, New York, Pennsylvania, back to Virginia, Alabama, Ohio, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and back to Virginia again.  When Joe started school, we settled down in Williamsburg and have been here for the last 22 years.  Moving around was exciting and fun, but once the kids were in school, I wanted them to have a stable life.

Early on in our relationship, Chris and I dreamt of buying a sailboat and moving to the Virgin Islands.  As much as we wanted to pick up and go, we decided it would be best to wait for our boys to finish school.  As the years flew by, our dream morphed from buying a sailboat in the islands to moving to Florida and opening a food truck.  The kids graduated high school, but we weren’t comfortable leaving them on their own just yet.

We planned to leave in August of last year.  We ended up going to a new restaurant to work in May.  It seemed to be an excellent opportunity to stack some cash before our move, so we committed to staying for one more year.  In January, we again changed our plans and decided that Colorado might be a better place for us than Florida.  We went for a visit and knew it was where we wanted to be.

We have spent the last few months preparing for our move, researching housing, jobs, and getting things in order here.  With the pandemic in full swing, some of it has been nerve-wracking, but somehow things have fallen into place.  Obligations changed our move date from August to October.  Our landlord was kind enough to extend our lease.

Packing up the house

We have down-sized for the move, selling our furniture.  Our furniture is a combination of things that we each brought to the relationship from our past lives.  Not only will getting rid of everything make our move more manageable, but it will allow us to start fresh and create a home that is entirely ours.

While we have been home for the last few months, we have decided that we want to change our lives completely.    We are over the idea of working for other people, most of whom do not appreciate the job that we do.   We are still planning to have the food truck, but would also like to homestead.  We have come up with a list of ways to make money on our own.

While a new start is exciting, it is terrifying as well.  The hardest part is leaving the kids.  They haven’t lived with us for years, but it has been easy enough to drive the hour anytime we want to see them.  My ultimate hope is that they will visit us in Colorado, fall in love with the area, and make a move as well.  A girl can dream, right?

When we get to Colorado, we will be busy.  We will have to find a place to live, as well as secure an income.  We are going to take two weeks to make the trip.  We couldn’t pass up the opportunity for a grand adventure on the way.  The loose ends are tied up, the U-haul box is packed (Chris did an amazing job getting almost everything to fit) and on its way to Colorado, and the truck is packed full.  Today is the beginning of our new adventure in life.

Packed and ready to go
