We were in the mood for sushi. When we realized that the number one sushi restaurant in the Lutz area closed at 3:00, we opted for the number two spot, Bangkok Sushi. We chose a seat on their patio and ordered sake while looking over the menu.

Bangkok Sushi offers both Thai cuisine and sushi. We decided to start with an order of Crab Rangoon. We were pleasantly surprised when our appetizer arrived. Usually, when I order Crab Rangoon, I enjoy a bite of crab and cream cheese but leave behind the rest of the over-cooked wonton. Not so at Bangkok Sushi. The crab and cream cheese, blended with Thai seasonings and curry powder, had a beautiful golden color and a fantastic curry flavor. They were huge and perfectly fried, with no inedible pieces. The plum dipping sauce added the perfect amount of sweetness to complement the Thai flavors. They set the bar for how I will judge Crab Rangoon in the future.

We ordered a combination of sashimi and sushi rolls for our main dish. I picked Maguro (tuna), while Chris chose Horagai (conch) and Tako (octopus), his favorite. There were three huge pieces each of the sashimi. The seafood was fresh and delicious, the tuna nearly melting in my mouth. However, we were not excited by the conch. Although it was fresh, we didn’t care for its tougher texture.

We enjoyed three sushi rolls as well, the Fresh Salmon Roll with cucumber and scallions, the Super Crunchy Roll with shrimp tempura, asparagus, cream cheese, spicy mayo, smoked salmon, eel sauce, and topped with tempura crunch, and the Rock-n-Roll with shrimp tempura, cream cheese, asparagus, eel, smoked salmon, avocado, and eel sauce. The rolls were massive, much larger than any we’ve had in the past. All of the ingredients were amazingly fresh and delicious. It was enough food to eat until we were comfortably satisfied while taking some home for a wonderful snack later.

While we were eating, we discovered a piece of hard plastic on top of one of the rolls. Working in the industry, we understand that sometimes things happen, so put it off to the side. Unfortunately, I found a piece of wrapper in another roll. Again, we put it to the side to show the server. Our server apologized profusely for the errors, and they did not charge us for the two rolls.

While we were disappointed to find the plastic in two rolls, we chalked that up to the chef having a bad day and were willing to give them another shot. We have since returned on several occasions to enjoy the quality ingredients and generous portions with no further issues.

The cost for three orders of sake, an appetizer, three orders of sashimi, and one sushi roll (the other two comped) was $74.10.
