Decisions, Decisions

There are so many restaurants in Key West that it was difficult to narrow down where we would eat the few meals we would have there. After consulting Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, we settled on Garbo’s Grill, a food truck behind Hank’s Saloon. We arrived just after they opened and chose an outdoor table with some shade. Our research indicated that there is usually a line out and around the corner for the food truck, so we were happy that we arrived before they got busy.

The server for Hank’s was friendly, giving me a choice of one large mimosa or two smaller ones (one for now and one for later) for the 2-for-1 special they were running. After a while, we asked about ordering food, and she apologized for not explaining the process to us. Hank’s Saloon and Garbo’s Grill are two separate entities that work together in a shared space. Cocktails come from the saloon while you order your food at the food truck.

I picked Cayo Fish Tacos, and Chris decided on a Kogi Dog. With his not being able to eat seeds, we asked about the sesame mayo on the dog. It did have seeds, and ordering the hot dog without the mayo was not an option. He was a little disappointed but understood why they could not accommodate the request. He went with the Cayo Fish Tacos as well.

Someone had placed a large order just before we ordered our food, so they let us know it would be a little longer than usual. The cashier gave us a beeper so we would know when our food was ready. The patio was beautiful, with a lovely atmosphere, so we didn’t mind waiting. Our only concern was getting back to feed the parking meter in time.

The Food

Just as we were about to change our order to a to-go order, the little buzzer went off, indicating that our food was ready. The two tacos of fresh fish, red cabbage, mango, jalapeno, cilantro, onion, and topped with their house Caribbean sauce were delicious and filling. The beautifully cooked fish, enhanced by the sweetness of the mango and the spiciness of the jalapeno, was terrific. The cabbage and onion added a nice crunch to the taco. The sauce was divine and completed the flavor explosion.

I would love to return to Garbo’s Grill again to taste more of their tantalizing menu. Cost for four tacos $31.50.
