While in St. Augustine we enjoyed a nice morning walk through the historic area to have breakfast at the Maple Street Biscuit Company, a Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives discovery.  The spring flowers were in bloom and were lovely against the beautiful Spanish architecture of the area.

Maple Street Biscuit Company is a counter service restaurant with some inside seating as well as several patio tables.  As we were looking over the menu a large group of people walked in.  Chris waited in line while I secured a patio table for us.  It was a gorgeous Spring morning and we wanted to enjoy the historic street ambiance.  He placed our order and then joined me outside.

Realizing that he had forgotten to order my coffee, I went inside to get some.  As I stood in line I heard them call “Pigeons Playing Ping Pong” and started to laugh as that is a band that our son, Joe, loves.  Then I realized that is the name Chris gave for our order.  I thought that was peculiar but amusing.  It made much more sense when he explained that they had asked for the name of the first rock album he ever bought.  Being put on the spot he couldn’t remember.  After hearing Joe talk about this band for the last few months, it was the first thing that popped into Chris’s mind.

Chris ordered the Three Layer Cake, a fried hashbrown cake with smoked gouda topped with chives, house-made sausage gravy and an egg.  He noticed on the menu that they also have a mushroom gravy and asked if he could have that instead of the sausage gravy.  The only problem was they were out of the mushroom gravy.  Unfortunately, the sausage gravy was very spicy, rendering the dish almost inedible for Chris.  He attempted to scrape the gravy off and just eat the hashbrown, but it was soggy and unappealing.

I had better luck with The Squawking Goat, a biscuit with a fried chicken breast, topped with a fried goat cheese medallion and drizzled with house-made pepper jelly.  The dish was delicious.  The chicken was beautifully cooked.  The creamy, decadent goat cheese paired wonderfully with the pepper jelly, which had a perfect spice level.

Sitting outside was a perfect choice.  We enjoyed the beautiful flowers, the birds on the cathedral roof across the street and watching the people as they walked by.

Cost for a mimosa and two dishes $27.69.
