Two years ago while I was planning our vacation we saw a show on the Travel Channel featuring a Charleston restaurant named Page’s Okra Grill. As we would be spending two days of our trip in Charleston, we decided we would have lunch there. We arrived at lunchtime on St. Patrick’s Day. The restaurant was very busy so there was a wait, but the food was worth it.
Last year we planned to have brunch there before we headed home, but Sunday brunch after St. Patrick’s Day was just too crowded and we ended up at another restaurant, which was a horrible mistake.
This year we were able to return to Page’s Okra Grill. We went for lunch on a Monday. We arrived half an hour before lunch ended, so there was no wait. Our server, Donna, did not seem at all happy that we were there. I get it, there is nothing worse than a table that walks in last-minute and then sits there forever. I guess she didn’t know we are not those people. Her attitude changed for the better once she realized that.
I ordered Holy Water, a tasty cocktail with vodka, rum, peach schnapps, lemonade, and blue curacao. For lunch, I ordered the Page’s P.B.T. This was the sandwich featured on the show I watched, and what I ordered the last time we were here. The sandwich made with house-made pimento cheese, applewood smoked bacon and fried green tomatoes on buttery grilled Texas toast garnished with pickled okra is hands down one of my favorite sandwiches that I have ever eaten. It is a rich, decadent flavor bomb. The pimento cheese is delicious and the fried green tomatoes add just the right amount of acid to cut the richness. The side salad was really nice as well with carrots, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, red onion, and cheddar.
Chris ordered the Country Fried Steak with homemade white pepper gravy. For his sides (there are 16 to choose from) he chose the mac & cheese, collard greens, and cornbread. Perfectly cooked, the dish was delicious. The cornbread was moist and had a great flavor.
Page’s Okra Grill is a spot that we will return to any time we are in the Charleston area.
Cost for a beer, a shot of Jameson, a cocktail, and two entrees $50.34.
