Last week we made our way across the James River on the ferry and had lunch at The Surry Seafood Company.  The restaurant is on the water with large windows across the back which allows for a great view while dining.  There is a large outdoor patio as well and plenty of dock space if you choose to arrive by boat.

Ericka was friendly and quick to replace the dirty appetizer plates that were on our table.  I ordered a Sunset Crush from the cocktail menu, a bright, refreshing, delicious combination of Absolut Mandarin, Triple Sec and Sprite with muddled oranges.

Chris ordered the Classic Oyster Shooter made with wild-caught local oysters.  The shooter had two oysters and was a little too big to shoot.  He also noticed that the oysters, while local, had been frozen.

My Crab Soup was the highlight of the meal.  Made with backfin from local blue crabs the luscious soup was rich and creamy.  I wish I had ordered a bowl instead of the cup.

We both ordered scallops.  Chris chose a plate with half broiled scallops and half blackened with squash and onion rings.  The scallops were beautifully cooked.  The onion rings had a lovely light breading but did not seem as if they were house-made.  The squash tasted as if from frozen as well.

I had the Stuffed Scallops, four large sea scallops topped with lump crab meat and broiled with a lemon butter herb sauce.  I was not overwhelmed by the scallops.  I think they might have been better had the sauce made it on to the plate.  Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that it was missing until I looked at the menu again to write this review.

When given the choice of sides, our server listed parsley as a side, which we thought was a bit strange.  We overheard another server telling her table that it was potatoes with parsley.  Had we been given the correct information we would have ordered the potatoes instead of the fries, which were nothing special.

I ordered Key Lime Pie to go.  The pie was more like a Key Lime cheesecake, but I was ok with that as it had a great flavor and texture.

As we left, I had an odd feeling that the staff at the bar was staring at us strangely, which was somewhat uncomfortable to me.  While the meal was a bit underwhelming, if I were to find myself on that side of the water I would return for the spectacular Crab Soup and the view.

Cost for a cocktail, a beer, oyster shooter, soup, two entrees and a dessert $79.13.
