As a child, we moved often. My dad’s job moved us every few years until I was 12. As a young adult (the emphasis on young), I moved from Floyd in the southwestern Virginia mountains to northern Virginia, West Virginia, and then Virginia Beach. I spent the next seven years bouncing from place to place around the country, New Orleans, California, New York, Pennsylvania, back to Virginia, Alabama, Ohio, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and back to Virginia again. When Joe started school, we settled down in Williamsburg and have been here for the last 22 years. Moving around was exciting and fun, but once the kids were in school, I wanted them to have a stable life.
Early on in our relationship, Chris and I dreamt of buying a sailboat and moving to the Virgin Islands. As much as we wanted to pick up and go, we decided it would be best to wait for our boys to finish school. As the years flew by, our dream morphed from buying a sailboat in the islands to moving to Florida and opening a food truck. The kids graduated high school, but we weren’t comfortable leaving them on their own just yet.
We planned to leave in August of last year. We ended up going to a new restaurant to work in May. It seemed to be an excellent opportunity to stack some cash before our move, so we committed to staying for one more year. In January, we again changed our plans and decided that Colorado might be a better place for us than Florida. We went for a visit and knew it was where we wanted to be.
We have spent the last few months preparing for our move, researching housing, jobs, and getting things in order here. With the pandemic in full swing, some of it has been nerve-wracking, but somehow things have fallen into place. Obligations changed our move date from August to October. Our landlord was kind enough to extend our lease.
We have down-sized for the move, selling our furniture. Our furniture is a combination of things that we each brought to the relationship from our past lives. Not only will getting rid of everything make our move more manageable, but it will allow us to start fresh and create a home that is entirely ours.
While we have been home for the last few months, we have decided that we want to change our lives completely. We are over the idea of working for other people, most of whom do not appreciate the job that we do. We are still planning to have the food truck, but would also like to homestead. We have come up with a list of ways to make money on our own.
While a new start is exciting, it is terrifying as well. The hardest part is leaving the kids. They haven’t lived with us for years, but it has been easy enough to drive the hour anytime we want to see them. My ultimate hope is that they will visit us in Colorado, fall in love with the area, and make a move as well. A girl can dream, right?
When we get to Colorado, we will be busy. We will have to find a place to live, as well as secure an income. We are going to take two weeks to make the trip. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity for a grand adventure on the way. The loose ends are tied up, the U-haul box is packed (Chris did an amazing job getting almost everything to fit) and on its way to Colorado, and the truck is packed full. Today is the beginning of our new adventure in life.
Your journey reminds me of my journey to Colorado just a few weeks over 19 years ago. I packed up and headed west hating to leave my sons behind but I knew i needed to go, to follow my dream, to heal and regain my sense of self. You two have the most wonderful journey! I can’t wait until I can drive over the Utah/Colorado state line to see you both.
Wishing you a safe traveling adventure and all the best in your new environs!
Best of luck with your move. I am moving in a week and a half to a larger city an hour from here. While you are moving away from your kids I am moving closer. I’m single and in my 60’s and when my kids moved away I decided to join them.
I lived in my childhood home until I moved in with my husband and we bought a house and I have lived in that ever since. We are now contemplating a move-AAAHHHH. Thankyou for sharing your journey!
Good luck with the move! You’ll love Colorado <3
I actually used to love to move. Always a new adventure and a new home. I kind of miss it! Have a great new adventure!
I had to move in September. I was terrified but now that I’m settled in it’s not so bad 🙂
Your childhood journey seems similar to mine, and how brave of you to leave the kids a couple of miles away. I never been to Colorado yet and I heard a lot of great things about it. May you both be blessed with your new adventure in life! It sounds exciting and interesting!

Good luck on your future endeavors!
You clearly were destined to be in Colorado! I hope for the best for you in your endeavors, I started to think about what I’d like to do and go after my kids are older.
It is definitely a strange transition from momma to the after momma life. It is really weird to no longer have the kids as the focal point of my life, but so far I am enjoying the new adventure.
I can’t imagine moving. Best of luck in Colorado!
New beginnings…exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time! Best of luck and adventure!

So timely!! We moved from Pittsburgh to Staunton, Virginia about 12 years ago, just the two of us. And now we are moving to the Richmond area with three kids and a dog! So exciting!
What an adventure you’ve already had! Here’s wishing you safe travels and tons of opportunity to explore and enjoy life in your new home.
