When looking for places to eat when we travel, our first resource is Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. There are several in the Jacksonville, Florida area. One of our favorite DDD discoveries is 13 Gypsies. Unfortunately, our recent trip was on the days they are closed. However, we found a seafood spot in Atlantic Beach that looked promising.
When we arrived at the waterfront location, we realized that they were closed, most likely because it was the day after Christmas. Disappointed, we decided to go to Culhane’s Irish Pub, another DDD location nearby.
We chose to sit in the dining area where they had live music. As soon as we sat down, a woman approached our table, offering cake and ice cream from a birthday party in the room. When our server arrived, Chris ordered a beer, and I asked for a cocktail menu. I don’t have a specific drink that I usually order. I always like to see what specialty cocktails restaurants offer and taste new drinks that sound delicious. As the temperature outside dropped, I was chilly, so I ordered Culhane’s Coffee. The coffee with Slane Irish Whiskey and brown sugar was warm and delicious.
We ordered Karen’s Scotch Egg as an appetizer. The boiled egg, wrapped in Irish sausage and panko-breaded, was lovely. I enjoyed the mashed potatoes, demi gravy, and hot mustard that came with the egg. I’ve only had the dish on one other occasion and was not impressed with it. This was a much better version, although Chris was disappointed that the egg was hard all the way through. He is hunting for a Scotch Egg with a runny yolk center.
We were unpleasantly surprised when our entrees arrived before we had even had the chance to start eating our appetizer. Chris ordered the smaller version of Bangers N’ Mash, Irish sausage over mashed potatoes with caramelized onions and demi gravy. Unfortunately, the links were overcooked.
I had Chad’s Shrimp & Grits, blackened shrimp, charred cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, parmesan cheese, garlic, and vodka cream sauce, over cheddar grits with scallions. While it wasn’t the best shrimp & grits I have tasted, it was good. I enjoyed the contrasting flavors of the vodka sauce with the shrimp and tomatoes.
Chris was still hungry after the smaller portion of Bangers N’ Mash, so we ordered Lynda’s Reuben Rolls. The wontons, filled with corned beef, Swiss, and sauerkraut, were tasty but nothing special.
While we ate, we enjoyed the music, and the place grew lively with a traditional Irish parade. It was a little disconcerting when strangers approached our table to talk to us, but apparently, that is normal in an Irish pub.
The cost for a shot, a beer, a cocktail, two appetizers, and two entrees was $73.10.
Chris always loved it when I made Scotch Eggs when he was younger. Good thing because I loved them too!
Now if only we can find a place that does them with a runny yolk.
He or you may have to make them to get runny yolks.
It seems to be the case.
So disappointing. I love all of these — especially bangers and mash. There’s an Irish pub here and one in Gilroy (garlic capital of the world!) that both do this dish really well. There’s an art to Scotch eggs too — maybe Mia will share her recipe and techniques. 😉
I am tempted to experiment to see if I can pull one off.
Thanks for sharing your honest review about the place. I always like checking out reviews to make sure a restaurant is actually worth going to or not.
Me too. With so many choices out there I don’t want to waste my time on a place that has consistently bad reviews.
I checked out their website and they have a Vegan Beyond Burger if you get it without the bun. Love seeing more and more restaurants offering vegan options.
I have noticed more vegan options on menus as well.
Love that you try all these awesome places out!
While they don’t all work out as we would like, we have discovered some amazing places.
As always, enjoy your blog articles – good review!
Thank you!
Thank you for the honest review!
As much as I would love to give every venue a great review, that is just not the reality. My goal is to let people know our experience so they know what they are in for if they go there.
Thank you for sharing. Appreciate the awesome review.
Was there earlier this month for my son-in-law’s birthday…3 adults, 3 kids, 2 of whom are obviously young enough for kid’s menu and 3rd that usually gets a kid’s meal depending on the individual restaurant’s policy…didn’t pay attention to my daughter as she ordered, but she’s consistent about requesting off the kid’s menu…when time came to pay the bill, the waitress showed me a hand-held device about the size of a cell phone & started scrolling rapidly through the charges…I couldn’t focus on the individual listed amounts & regrettably just handed her my card to pay the charges…she texted my receipt, which again I regrettably didn’t check before we left. Got home and realized instead of 3 kid’s meals (for chicken tenders, fries & drink) at $8 each, I had been charged $35.97 for 3 adult chicken tender appetizers, $18 for 3 orders of adult fries (because the appetizer chicken tenders don’t come with anything else), and $10.57 for three soft drinks…that was more than $60 instead of the $24 I was expecting…totally not worth it…
