While exploring the Old Colorado City, Manitou Springs area of Colorado, we decided on Front Range Barbecue for lunch. We had watched the episode about the restaurant on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and it looked like a definite winner. Even better was that it was conveniently located close to our adventures for the day.
With the ban on dining in, we decided a picnic at Garden of the Gods would be fun. We called our order in before we left the Manitou Cliff Dwellings and it was ready by the time we arrived. The restaurant is on the main street in Old Colorado City. We parked around the block. As we walked we had a spectacular view of Pikes Peak. We walked around to the back of the restaurant where they had set up a tent to pick up carry out orders. They took the extra precaution of taking payment over the phone to have as little physical interaction as possible.
Chris ordered the Brisket Plate with mashed potatoes and green beans. The barbecue was very good, with a lovely smoky flavor to the really tender brisket. The burnt ends were delicious. The gravy on the mashed potatoes was rich and flavorful. The onion straws were a nice touch to round out the plate.
I ordered The Sloppy Pig, the sandwich featured on DDD. The flavor of the pulled pork was on point, some of the best I have had that Chris didn’t make himself. The pork, with grilled Kielbasa, bacon, cheddar, sweet & spicy bbq sauce, spicy slaw, pickles and onion straws, was on a soft, tasty potato bun. The sandwich was so big I wasn’t sure how to go about eating it. Chris suggested I just wrap it in the deli paper and go for it. The very messy sandwich, I was glad I had asked for extra napkins, was a perfect flavor combination, every bite highlighting a different taste. The leftovers were just as good the next day.
With Pikes Peak overlooking our table, it was a perfect picnic lunch.
Cost for a plate and a sandwich $37.78.
This made me hungry for the food and to see Manitou Springs again.
