Before our move next week, we wanted to visit with the owner of the restaurant that we worked at for eight years. He suggested we meet for lunch at Taqueria Maria Bonita. The restaurant has a few outdoor tables, so we felt comfortable with that idea.
We walked into the small restaurant to a friendly greeting. When we told them we would like to sit outside, they gave us menus and told us to pick a table. Our server, who was wearing a mask, asked if we would like something to drink. Unsure, I asked for more time and was pleased that our server gave us ample time to review the menu before returning. In the meantime, the requisite chips and salsa arrived at our table. As soon as I tasted one of the chips, I knew we were in for a good lunch. They had a lovely light, crispy texture.
The restaurant offers the usual soda and tea, but also has Mexican sodas and some beer selections. The menu is not huge but has a nice variety of Mexican food available. I ordered Enchiladas Poblanas, chicken enchiladas with mole sauce, sour cream, queso fresco, and red onions from the Favorites menu. The spectacular enchiladas did not disappoint. The tortillas were even better than the chips, and I thoroughly enjoyed the decadent mole sauce. The two enchiladas were plenty of food. I ended up boxing the delicious rice and the refried beans.
Chris ordered Chile Rellenos, also served with rice and refried beans. He is a big fan and orders them anytime we see them on the menu. Having once worked at a restaurant famed for their chile Rellenos, Chris is very often disappointed by what he gets. He continues to order the peppers, though, hoping that he will find somewhere that does them well. Cheddar in the peppers threw him off, but otherwise, Chris thought the dish was good. I thought they were delicious, but my chile Rellenos standards are not as high as his.
He also ordered a Barbacoa taco, made with shredded lamb. The perfectly cooked meat was flavorful, with soft, delicious tortillas.
With good service and fantastic food, I only wish we had discovered this gem sooner.
Two of my very favorite things to order (I also like cheese enchiladas with mole sauce)!!! Bliss when they’re done right. 🙂
Wishing you an easy and uneventful move. 🙂

The enchilada’s are making me hungry.
I never had lamb in a taco but it looks delicious!
Lamb in tacos? That is very different. I have never tried lamb. Someday when I get brave. LOL.

Looks so good! My go-to restaurant in Atlantic City had the most amazing mole sauce, but they shut down and I can’t find anything comparable. This looks and sounds close!
