On our second day in Fayetville, WV, we played Wonderland Disc Golf Course in Minden. The course, nestled between a water park and a festival venue, plays around the side of the mountain.
I would consider this a rustic course, with dirt and mat tees. It is beautiful, with some wide-open holes, some narrow passageways, and some in the woods.
The first hole is right next to the parking area. It plays across a field, over what appears to be a small creek (it was dry when we played), and then around a corner. There are diamonds to mark the way to the next hole, but we had to look around on a few of them.
The second hole is a very long downhill drive, either around a grove of trees or through a narrow gap in the trees, and then across the field. You cannot see the basket from the tee. If you have the arm for it, around the trees seems to be the way to go. A lot can go wrong if you don’t play through the gap just right.
The third hole is a narrow passage, not far, but keep an eye on your disc. An errant shot can quickly get caught up in the dense brush. Chris threw left, and it took us forever to find his disc. Luckily, Joe happened to look up at just the right spot to find it stuck up in a tree.
The eleventh hole sits on the edge of a severe downhill drop. Chris threw just a little too far to the right and ended up on the road far below. After a short second shot, he managed to launch it up the side of the mountain without hitting a single tree to land it near the basket.
The sixteenth hole was a lot of fun. From the tee, you shoot over the trees into the field far below. It looks much more intimidating than it is. As you walk through the trees, you realize that they are not as dense as they appear from the top. The hardest part of playing this hole was the time of day. It was near sunset, and we shot directly into the sun, making it almost impossible to see.
The seventeenth tee was the most difficult to find, backtracking into the woods to find it.
Wonderland was a fun course to play. There are quite a few spots where playing it safe is the better option, but the guys could not resist going for it. As for Jenny and myself, we just played the best we could. None of us had a stellar game, but the course was great, and the company was terrific.
What a gorgeous course! So much better than our local one. And I’d be just as bad at it — maybe worse. 😉
Where are you located? We’ve played probably over 100 courses up and down the east coast, and now some heading west.
I hope to someday learn to play golf. I used to follow a friend around while he played with his buddies. It was always so relaxing to me.
I can’t imaging getting a shot into that little basket. However, I do occasionally get a shot into a hole on the green 🙂 — Same Difference?
Sounds like a wonderful course!
Such a pretty course! I’ve never played, maybe some day.
I’m not a golfer, but I definitely enjoyed your wonderful photos! Looks like a really nice place!
Fun times! Glad you enjoy disc golf!
